MSCE Peeps...Please Help
|
|
|
| Hi all.
I've been reading the 2000 Server book and find a lot of unfamiliar terms in there (active directory, something about trees and forests, etc.).
Will things clear up as I progress through the book (Sybex), or should I read one of the others first?
Ideally, I want to get to know Server first, that way I'll have more hands on with 2000 Server before I return to the workforce.
The other books are 2000 Professional, Network Infrastructure Administration, and Directory Services Administration.
Any thought or suggestion? TIA!

| look at the Directory Services book. ADS (Active Directory) is MS's attempt at an x.500 directory structure for networking (heard of NDS by Novell? ADS wants to be NDS). forests are multiple trees. trees are the ROOT of the the AD implemetation... more or less.
i used the Mastering AD published by Sybex (and more), it's a good starter for AD should you want more options.
Active Directory is the MAIN change in Win2000 networks...

| If you previously have experience with NT4, you'll notice a huge difference between certain parts of W2K and NT.
I'm assuming that you don't have NT4 MCSE? If you can, obtain a copy of W2K, (professional will do initially), and have a play. The active directory is quite a difficult concept, but one that can be understood just by playing.
For all those who have experience with IIS4, the active directory is based around the same concept.
Unfortunately, I don't think books alone will tell you what you need to find for yourself.

| Firechicken,
I guess from your enquiry you did not do NT4 exams. Do not worry too much, I believe you have the resources to pass W2K professional and server exams since you were able to pass your CCNA. What you need to do is to play with the product as often as you can, the concepts will become clear gradually, I can assure you.

| Thanks a bundle, people. I have a burned...er...I bought a copy of 2000 Professional for my studies.
I also got the 2000 Advanced Server 180-day trial (thanks for the link, examnotes!), so I'll install that when I learn more about it.
If you guys could provide some good links you used for MSCE studies, I'd very much appreciate it!
BTW, thanks for the vote of confidence, Jazebel!
Thanks again.

| Directory services conceots are pretty much the same no matter which vendor you go to. I suggest you grab the Sybex Complete Guide to Novell Directory Services from you rlocal book store. Sure it is written around NDS but ADS is a direct copy of NDS and the terminology is nearly the same. The Sybex NDS book will be far easier for you to understand and the reading is not quite as boring as the exam preparation books. Fo rthe Professional and Server exams, you probably won't find many ADS questions...I don't recall seeing any to be honest with you, but I had the adaptive test and saw only about 20-25 questions.
The sybex book will make Directory Services very clear to you, and with a solid week you'll havethe concepts.

BTW, I noticed on another post you mentioned HL. Do you play TFC? Your handle sounds familiar, and I was thinking we have played on the same server.
Anyway...maybe I'll catch ya on one of the servers one day...look for the guy on the top of the frag/cap list and that's probably me! LOL

| The reason I posted this here was because I highly value the opinion and knowledge of our board members.
No offense, but if I feel like posting a an unrelated topic looking for advice from our board members, then I will do so.

| Yeah!!
He can post what he wants to!! You don't have to respond to his posts!! You don't have to watch SURVIVOR II if you don't want to!! You can turn it off!! It's a free country!! CCNA MCSE CNE IEEE EIEIO... we are all a family in the Network Infastructure industry.
At least there are no MOUS posts. Imagine that, "I can't get my excel to import." or "Does anyone have the Exam D-senntials for Word 2000?" When we start to see posts like this, then we should worry...
