RARP is an OSI data-link layer protocol
WTF!!! Isn't ARP and RARP by definition layer 3 protocols?

| You are right, it is a layer 3 protocol cause they are "ARP Packets," but the only thing I could see from that is that it does work with the data link layer to find the MAC address. Great question, I hope someone can clarify that one. | |

| Looks like Boson messed up on this one. I went and double-checked, and according to my Cisco netacad book, ARP and RARP were listed under the network layer protocol section.

| If you go to www.protocols.com you can get a nice and free "World of protocols 1999 - 2000" poster that has tens, if not hundreds, of protocols. They put ARP and RARP at the Data Link layer.
Sometimes categorizing IP protocols is arbitrary. That's probably because the IP stack predates the OSI model. For the CCNA exam I would go with Cisco's opinion on the issue.

Seems so strange though, that Boson would let this slip through. Maybe they know that answering layer 2 on this q. will give you a higher mark?
I'm so nervous I'm shaking right now (with 3 days to go) Guess I should've started on the practise exams a bit earlier

| In another q. in the same test, Boson say to be careful about ARP and RARP since cisco consider them to be layer 3 protocols. Weird.
