vlan configuration on vtp servers
| the vlan configurations are saved into nvram.
does it mean that, when i backup the starting-configuration on a switch in a vtp server mode(copy nvram tftp), i also do a backup of the vlans?
therefore, if for some reason, i need to recreate all my vlan configuration, i can use the nvram backup (copy tftp nvram)?
thank for your comment

| Good question. If you copied your startup configs to tftp, it should recreate all of the others. clients cannot add delete or change vlans, they rely on advertisements from the server catalysts. the only problem you run into is the id of the advertisement. if you have 2 servers, for instance and they both had different vlan info, the one with the higher revision advertisement # will be used and the other deleted. For instance, you brought a server catalyst online with a higher advertisement number but no vlans, it would advertise this info and all the other switchs would see a higher number and change their tables to match eventually deleting all vlans in your network. But to answer your question, if you save your configs, and used that when you come back online, it should send that info out and restore everything granted no other advertisements take presedence overriding it. you may have to reset all of the switches in your network to clear the VTP NVRAM configuration revision # and set it back to 0. power cycling the switch will reset the vtp number to zero, clear config all will not. the default starts at 0 and counts to 2,147,483,648 before going back to zero.
If you are totally confused, then the answer is yes, but power cycle all of your other switches to reset the number when you bring the server back on. |
