Folks
I am going nuts
Listen to this query...
Bridges and switches operate at Data Link layer. But do they have the capablity of converting one layer 2 frame into another...
like if i want to connect 2 networks using ethernet II and 802.3 resp., can i use a bridge to connect them. i know "segementation" isnt the objective here...but crazy ideas are hard to be quelled down
thanks

| as far as I know this is what a router is supposed to do. There are many kinds of switches and some have fancy abilities but as far as the exam goes a generic switch does not connect different frame types to each other. It can carry multiple protocols but it cannot help them to talk to each other if they don't already know how. I could be wrong of course, anybody else have more details. | |

| My thinking on this is:
A bridge or basic switch by itself cannot
connect two Novell networks together.
Each frame type will need its own
separate interface (or sub-int) with
a diff. network #, which is configure
on a router.
You can create VLANs on a switch to
group computers but it will still need
a router to provide ipx routing and
SAP services.
As LeX stated, newer switches such
as multi-layer switches might have
more capabilities, and I am not
up to par on those.
