Author IPX network portion

Cisco Press's book says the max number of hex digits in the network portion of the IPX address is 8. Lanny's site (which is, by the way an excellent site - thanks Lanny) says 16. I think the max is actually 4. Who's right?

Size of IPX address is 80 bits.

Network Portion: 32 bits
Host Portion: 48 bits
8 bits = 1 byte = 2 Hex Digits

So in Hex
Network Portion: 8 Hex Digits
Host Portion: 12 Hex Digits

Thanks mdbilal. I guess what confuses me a bit is that whenever I see an IPX address it always looks something like this:

4a1d.oc56.de33

where 4a1d is the network portion. This doesn't look like 8 hex digits to me. It looks like 4! Where is my reasoning astray?

Deets512,

The full address would be:

00004a1d.0c56.de33

In common practice, the leading zeros in the network address are dropped for the sake of simplicity.

Whenever an ipx address is mentioned in full (network part and host part), as a normal practice the prefix zeros in network part is ignored, but full 12 Hex Digit Host is mentioned, even if the host part contains leading zeros.

The address you mentioned is only host part. It doesn't have network part. Example for full ipx address

0000123F:4a1doc56de33
--------:------------
NetPart.|Host Part
Prefix..|
Zeros...|____As a general habit a colon is
may be.......used to differentiate network
ignored......an host part.

When specifying host address you may notice a period or a hyphen between every four Hex Digit or every two Hex digit.

I had explained what I had understand, Any comments welcomed.

Oops! My mistake... not enough hex digits in network portion of the address in my post above. Thanks for the heads-up.
