Author A Cisco router with IOS & useful for ADSL Inet sharing?

2000-08-22, 12:46 am

Hello! I've been reading these forums through my MCSE & Network+ certs. and finally decided to register to post a question!
I would like to find a Cisco router model that has the IOS to practice on, which will also allow me to connect my home network to the internet via a single IP address. I have been on ebay and seen the 675 for around $100, but I don't think that one has the IOS on it. I have read that the 1400 series is for DSL, but I'm not sure that it will allow internet sharing (built in DHCP). I think there is an 800 series model that also is for ADSL, but I'm not sure if it has an IOS to play with as well. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it!

look at
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc...it/827ad_ds.htm

I haven't used any 800 series myself but it does pat/nat/dhcp etc and up to 20 users. Don't know the price of one though..

You should look for any router that supports NAT and of course supports whatever kind of DSL you are using, because that will allow multiple users on your private side of the network to share one IP on the public (internet) side.

Andy,

Nice to see somebody else from Wales on this forum!!!

I have checked and a 800 series ISDN router is about £350 (UKP, soz don't know the $ cost)

For an 803 you can add an extra £100

Cool, thanks! That sounds like what I am looking for! I want to kill two birds with one stone, get a router that has a real IOS to play with (no simulations) and be able to share my aDSL connection with all of my PC's here at home. It looks like the 827 would be all I need (don't really need the 827-4V (4 voice ports)). I tried locating one on ebay, but they don't have any!
Buy.com seems to be having some problems with their router pages too, so I can't seem to be able to get a good price on one yet, but I'll keep checking! Thanks for your help!

Did some research and went to www.shopper.com and found the Cisco 827 for $437 at chaseshop.com, which has the IOS to play with and I can also share all of my PC's via a single connection! It uses the same chipset as my existing Alcatel 1000 aDSL modem, so I can actually replace it with just my Cisco router. Thanks guys!
