Author Frame Relay mapped to layer 2 or 3

2000-07-21, 2:17 pm

I am confused now. I always thought that Fame Relay work at layer 2.

Now from the transcender question it is menioned that it works at layer 3.

Any explanation would be very much appreciated.

Mariefahmy,

Frame Relay protocols operate at both Physical and Data Link layers. It is used to encapsulate Layer 3 protocols, such as IP.

You may want to verify this by reviewing RFC 1490, "Multiprotocol Interconnect over Frame Relay" at www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1490.html
