I am about to earn an A.A.S degree in Computer Networking Technology. I am also studying for the CCNA. I am not sure if I should purse a bachelor degree(Technical Management) or go after the MCSE before going for a bachelor's degree. I want to get some real-world, hands-on experience in networking, but a lot of places do not take a risk with an inexperenced technician. I currently work as a field support technician for a school system, but because of how our department is set up, I do not get any networking exposure. I am basically a troubleshooter for the Help Desk. The way the IT industry is you cannot get interviewed without actual experience AND a major certification.

Go for your MCSE. Do it now while your on a roll. With your experience along with some college; you should be able to get through it quickly... Good Luck...

B. Digital,
Chrome is right. Go for the MCSE too. It all counts. Not all companies have the same hiring practices. It's my belief that you get as many certs as you're able to handle. Can't hurt you, only help you. Also, experience will come as you go. It did for me.

That's what I was thinking as well. I feel that with my Associate's degree, a hardware certification(CCNA)and a software certification(MCSE)would make me more well-rounded and marketable. I want more experience, but that is kind of hard working for a school system that is pretty much settled on their current level of technology.

I have some input on this, i think that if you want to obtain higer position such as director, proj. mgr., etc. you must have a B.S. of some type, not speciffically tech. or CS. but just showing the employer that you have an interdisciplinary education. I am doing this myself. In august i will be 36 credits shy of my BS is CS/Telecom option, and i am currently CCNAv2, net+, and i-net+. i am thinking of taking a full time tech position for the next 2 yrs and then just doing 9x4 = 36 and its like killing 2 birds with one stone, BS and 2 yrs experience. What do you guys think??? or should i just go and do 18 and 18, but have to settle for entry level because of lack of practical experience.??? this is really stumping me.. would apprecitate some help....... thanks.

From what I have seen, experience is everything -- get as much of it as possible. You can always pick up certs later, if necessary. As for the degree, where I am you wouldn't even get an interview without one.
