| I'm confuse about:
1)collision and collision domain--if there have more collision domain, it will reduce collision number?
2)broadcast and broadcast domain, what's the relation between them?
3)If set a router to lan segment, why someone said it will reduce broadcast but increace the broadcast domain?
Thanks! | |

| Before I answer your questions, I'll give you a brief introduction to help you understand better.
You can group a LAN into smaller segments to improve the performance of the network. Layer 2 (Data Link) segmentation of LAN is attained by using bridges to segment a LAN into Collision domains thus higher bandwidth is available which in term produces better performance. Broadcast Domain on the other hand, uses layer 3 segmentation, hence, each segment is in a different subnet as oppose to a Collision Domain where each segment belongs to the same subnet. This is attained using a router or a switch. A switch logically sub-divides a LAN into subnet as a result it will created a VLAN. A VLAN can span switches, so 2 users can be located in different location while still belongs to the same broadcast domain and subnet. In order for VLANs to communicate, you require a router or by using a Layer 3 switch.
For the first question, there will be fewer users in each collision domain thus less collisions of traffic. The bridge gather information about the MAC address of each collision domain and only forwards packet to other domains when needed.
For your 2nd question, generally, a braodcast can not pass through a router and each segment is consider a broadcast domain.
For your third, fewer users in a segment will result in less broadcast because routers pass the broadcast to another segment if needed only.
I don't have time to edit the above properly. Hope that helps. | |
