Author Register Values

2000-06-07, 6:46 am

Could anyone please tell me how many values the boot register could take on so that the router knows where to boot from? And which value corresponds to which location. Because the book that I'm now reading does not explain this clearly.

It seem that many exam simulators have questions of that type but I don't know whether this is covered in the syllubus.

Thanks a lot

The lowest four bits are used to form the boot field. Here are the values as I have seen them.

0x0 Use ROM monitor mode. (In this mode you can use an "o" command to list the Configuration Register settings.

0x1 Automatically boot from ROM (Provides IOS subset)

0x2 to 0xF Examine NVRAM for boot system commands (0x2 default if router has flash.)

Hope this helps
