Author Cisco Certifications vs 4 Year Degree...

2000-05-18, 10:14 pm

I have heard many people discussing the importance of Cisco and MCSE and 4 year degree in comp science. I am not really sure which direction to go. I have 2 year degree in comp science, A+, N+, I+ Certifications, but still cannot find a good job. I was wondering if you guys have any input on what direction I might should take. Cause I'm lost, I plan on going back to college this summer.

Well I know what you are talking about. I think that all this hipe about IT is just that hipe. These certification training that cost a arm and a leg are just ways to make vendors rich, they are really making the money. You have some good certifications but
do you have any experience? I think that it also depends where you live. I live in Maryland. There a lot of jobs here for IT.
What ever you do, don't waste your money on nonthing you can't use. I can't see getting no certification and can't use it. By the way where do you live.

I live in Alabama and there are hardly no jobs down here for anyone. I am the first person to get i-Net+ for the college i goto. The jobs are hard to come by. I cannot move though cause my soon-to-be wife goes to a university down here, and she does not have no one to support her but me. So I cannot leave the state, I send in resumes' all the time but no one calls me back... So I dunno what to do except go back for 4 year degree in computer science...

I'm very sorry to hear that you're having a rough time getting started, i know it's not easy to get experience at first. Would your fiance be willing to transfer to another university between semesters? There are sooo many jobs here in Connecticut that I'm sick of getting calls. I know it sounds terrible but have you thought about going to like CompUSA Tech Department or something just to get experience? Have you put your resume on Monster and Hotjobs? Try appying to places even if you feel you're unqualified, you might be supprised at what some companies will do if they like you enough -
Good Luck -

I live close to Birminham. I even went through a consulting company to find work and they couldn't get me nor any of my friends a job! I work for GTE Internet right now as Technical Support, but the pay is low, the hours are horrible and their thinking of closing the center. Everyone that works there is bailing out right now cause its screwed up. Even the Supervisors are heading out. I work in the last Tier 3, which handles MAC, ISDN, ADSL, Dial-UP accounts. I am in the last tier and we make more than anyone else, which is sad cause its not much money either. They built the call center in a poor neighborhood in stead of somewhere like Hoover (medium-class people).

CiscoKid's point:
"Try appying to places even if you feel you're unqualified, you might be supprised at what some companies will do if they like you enough."

Is so true, I applied for a System Consultant job, for Novell! with which i have little knowledge of, except for basic admin skills. They liked me and even though i did not have the right skill set, have taken me on and are training me for the CNA exam.
I would think about adding Cisco and atleast a MCP and/or CNA and moving up the scale from there to MCSE &/or CNE.

But alway take someting that is useful to you. I took the IIS exam for my MCSE and now wish I had gone for exchange instead.

The very best of luck to you!
