Author Switch Ports & "Learning State"

2000-12-29, 4:41 am

Hi all.

I can't find any information on when a switch port might be in the "learning state". The only thing my books tell me is that the learning state exists.

Can someone clue me in?

Thanks!

The port is in the learning state after spending a short time in the listening state but before entering the forwarding state. In the learning state it will continue to listen for BPDUs that could prevent it from entering the forwarding state. Unlike the listening state it will now start filling its MAC address table with addresses it learns.

The complete sequence of states a port can go through is:
Blocking->Listening->Learning->Forwarding
In any of these states the bridge may discover that it should stay in/go back to the Blocking state.

The lack of hello messages can start the transition from the Blocking state and up the scale.

With the way I am, the problem usuallly is a Layer 8 problem...aka "The User" layer.
