Management Port for a Hub?
|
|
|
| Hey all.
I read that some Cisco hubs offer a management port. From what I know of hubs, there is nothing to be managed. Can someone please help me understand?
Thanks! | |

| Maybe it's just a port to console to that keeps track of what's going on in the segment (collisions, traffic type, etc.)
Whatcha think? | |

I agree with you, there is not much to manage. Except perhaps enabling/disabling individual ports and/or the entire hub. As you suggest there might however be some usefull statistics to collect that is storeable, conveniently availabe and more detailed than what you can get from the front panel LEDs. Also with CDP you can discover the device and its place in the network (in case you just ate your system documentation).
These are speculations though and I would like to see an answer from someone who has used hub management and can explain why life as we know it would not be possible without
