Author Real World Administration

Hi all. I know some of you work in various IT fields. I was wondering what a network administrator or assistant does in the real world all day? Thanx.

Judging by this Forum, we don't do anything but answer posts!
(You may note that I'm posting mostly at night these days cuz I don't have time to do it at work)

Seriously though, in a Network Operations Center monitoring a large network you would see Montiors watching your network and displaying alarms when it senses a problem. While the techs aren't working an actively down site they may be working with a site to add new services like and ISDN backup circuit or adding dialup capabilities. Other tasks involve bringing up new sites or taking down old ones. Upgrading a sites banwidth is another popular task. Every couple of years you may do a network wide IOS upgrade on all your routers. In this type of enviroment every day is different and you are "forced" to keep learning new stuff.

In this case I think bigger is better because you get to do a variety of interesting tasks.

Sounds like interesting work. I'd love to give it a try some day.

Me, give YOU pointers?! Unless you wish to become an Exchange Server guru, it is I who should be learning from you!

I just want to get my hands dirty and work with some real routers. Exchange server work has its challenges, and I like it a lot, but eventually I'd like to try my hand at Cisco work.
