HDLC used as encapsulation for ISDN??
|
|
|
| In all my textbooks, the encapsulation used for ISDN is PPP. Is it possible to use HDLC?
(I would have tested this on r1r2, but the router is fubared, or something.)

| I'll keep my fingers crossed for your test - and I'm sure you have even learned too much -
you better should do the ccnp-exam :-)
GOOD LUCK, siegi

| The following quote came from the cisco site: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td...tm#xtocid588424
"Datagram Encapsulation Issues
ISDN can use PPP, HDLC, or X.25 for encapsulation. PPP is used most frequently as it provides an excellent mechanism for authentication and negotiation of compatible link and protocol configuration."

| Hey downunder Deets,
If you have Todd's book ck. out pg.510 under the heading ISDN with Cisco Routers. You'll find all the encaps there.
Remember that HDLC is the DEFAULT encapsulation type on a Cisco ISDN router. Since each HDLC protocol is proprietary to each vendor, changing the encapsulation type to PPP is the preferred way to go for assured communication. Hence, using Cisco's HDLC on the ISDN router will only communicate with other Cisco products. There's other reasons as well for going with PPP but I'm sure you know those already.
Should be summer down there, right? So put another shrimp on the barbie. | |

| Thanks guys. I thought HDLC would be OK. It makes sense, really...PPP is an option to HDLC on leased lines, I don't see why it can't be used with ISDN.
Not quite summer yet, though not far off! Getting warmer, but I live in Melbourne which is known in Australia for being rather "crap" on the weather front
"I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping planes, but now I live in Melbourne where it always bloody rains!"
(Famous Australian poem, twisted around)
Cheers,
