Author confusing switch issue

2000-10-26, 8:12 pm

Ok, this is the situation. I haven't seen it (it's in our Jersey warehouse) but it was described to me by my supervisor who knows more than I do (which isn't, of course, saying that much, but he is pretty good.)

We inherited this network, and among other things is a Novell Server. We have a cable from the patch panel to a switch, and from the switch to a hub. Nothing else is on this switch--nor is anything else on this hub yet.
However, the collision light is constantly lit, as if there are constant collisions. Does anyone know where the collisions might be occuring?
If I haven't given enough info, let me know, and I'll find out more.
TIA
Scott

First guess at this point would be either bad switch/hub port or you are not using a crossover cable or up-link port to connect the two devices.
- Test all cables
- Check the ports
Provide more about what type of hub, switch, and what device has the collision light.

is it possible to access the netware server connected to the switch from a client connected to hub without delay?
maybe there are to many rip- or sap-broadcasts.
do you use 2 netware-servers with SFTIII running?

Thanks very much guys. I suspect it's a cabling issue as well, especially with the nature of the setup of the warehouse. Also, due to various things going on there right now, my supervisor is so overloaded, he might have missed the obvious---when we find the solution, I will let you guys know.

Thanks very very much.

To add yet more possibilities:

If you were using the wrong port ie the uplink port then you wouldn't get a link light on the hub let alone any collisions

Does the connection actually work, I doubt it if the collision light is permanently on. This means that either you have a dodgy network card or the more likely answer is that you have one device setup for 10meg and the other for 100meg. If you plug a 10 meg into a 100meg port you will not a link light, however if you plug a 100m port into a 10meg port you will get a permanently lit port (collision light)
