| Hi to all,
I work in I.T support for a company in Ireland. Recently my employer ask me to implement connectivity for 20 regional offices across Ireland to have internet/email access.
I need some help on choosing exactly what hardware and software I will need in order to manage such a structure from a centralised location in the city.
At present each office has about 5 pc's on a peer-to-peer network win 95/98, using bnc cables.
There is only 1 office that connects to our main network, via a leased isdn line using a Cisco router and a telelabs box.
The idea is to install Isdn lines in each office with new servers "that is a p4 pc to act as the file server" that would also take an external usb Isdn modem.
Am I in over my head here?? Lol
Advice gladly accepted.

| As I can say, for designing networks for a living, your in a great place to learn. Just remember, and folow the simple steps, Reseach, Plan, Test, Re-Plan, Test Again, Some more Research then Implement. Simple hugh, don't forget the testing! Build the network from the cables up.
1.) What will the remote server be doing?
2.) How much bandwidth is needed between the CO (Central Office) and the BO (Branch Office)?
3.) What OS should I use? (Win2K, XP, Linux, etc.)
4.) Is secure a factor? (If so, 3DES tunnels to the CO over the leased ISDN line will provide the extra security.
5.) How much bandwidth is being used at each site currently? at the co?
6.) Is there a multi-year plan? Is this the framework for the plan? Is so, rethink the equipment used, (opt for Switches, and good routers)
You get the picture, approach it with caution, make sure to ask other IT/IS professionals what they think, get feedback (allways helps), and then re-think your plan if nessiary.
Just as a FYI to you, if you want the BO's to see a server farm, or worksations in the CO, make sure NETBIOS, DNS, and LDAP (all for 2K, XP) will make it past the routers. Good luck! | |
