If the company network or a segment of a network is connected to the Internet, that segment is called Extranet. For exam remember that Extranet is the least secure type of network because an intruder can gain an access from the Internet.

Now, I copied this off the notes of this site, but I've also seen that the internet is the least secure. Does it depend on how the question is asked?

An Extranet, as far as I have read, is usually a portion of a company's intranet that is extended to their clients and customers to share product info. etc.

When it comes to security, it's hard to compare an Extranet with the Internet because an Extranet is managed by the Network Admin. while the Internet is not. This means that, if you're a Network Admin., you should implement a firewall, digital certificates, and encryption to make sure that there are no holes.

Which is more secure? It really depends on the security precautions put in place on the Extranet. However, I would say the Internet is far more dangerous to users than a properly managed Extranet.

Just my opinion though.

What I can say is that the Extranet use VPN to interconnect over the Internet which means more secure than the Internet.
