| 1. What device translates one protocol into another and can connect dissimilar network technologies?
router or gateway and why?
what do routers and gateways do?
Some of the online tests say routers and others say gateways.
what is the real answer.

| I like to think of Gateways as a technigue for connecting e.g., different e-mail programs (transfer of differnt e-mail programs over the network, e.g., Apple's
e-mail w/ IE's Outlook Express program. This means gateways operate at the application layer. Once the transfer involves the internet (or WAN) connection then the Router
comes into play.
Routers connect different topologies (especially one's that need to be routed over e.g., a WAN). Routers operate at or over the network layer.
Ladies & Gents, please feel free to correct
any errors in my explanation. Thanks | |

| Isn't it really "A gateway is a router, but a router is not necessarily a gateway"? |
