CompTIA Exams are CHEAP!

| I think it is time to educate some of the people on this board.
Yeah, on face value I would say that $190.00 for an exam is Expen$ive. But it does not have to be that way! Let me explain and educate some people who are novices to certification programs out there.
1st.) I/we have to remember that the CompTIA exams don't require to be "Re-Certified" every two or three years the way Microsoft, Cisco or Novell require to stay current to use the logos & certs behind your name! "Life-Time Certification" as A+, Network+, i-Net+, Server+, etcetras... How many are A+ certified before the 2001 track, yeah!!
2nd.) These exams are sometimes substituted for other vendor exams like INTEL so that means NOT having to pay INTEL another $100.00! If you take the i-Net+ then you also get the CIW Associate Certification behind your name too (DAMN, loved it when they are FREE) or does that make ONLY $95.00 per?
3rd.) If you pay to join the CompTIA organization then you or your company gets a 25% discount (say about $50 off if my math is correct). Membership is good for 1 or two years (I think it was $49.95 or $99.95 respectfully)!!
4th.) If you are going to do multiple certifications with CompTIA then the savings will start to add-up!! If you just want to take the i-Net+ exam then the membership is a wash or break even deal @ $190.00! For me and most of the people on this board, I/we are always interested in learning and so having all those extra letters after our name is impressive and gets cheaper. It also helps to pay for Certification Study Materials from Sybex & others...
Finally, if your employer is paying you may or may not care what it costs. But you do possible care when pay raises come around and you have the certifications and your co-worker(s) do not and you get more money because of it. Or you get the job and the other guys lose out seeing you had the certification or more of them, etcetras...
I am getting of my soap box now,
Doug

| Doug,
All valid points, I joined Comptia, and received the 25% off my Net+ exam, and I enjoy the newsletter each month to stay current on industry news, and changes in Comptia. There are other benefits as well, and they sent a nice Certificate of Membership and all that. I don't solely rely upon my membership for news and information needless to say, but it works for me.
Oh, that Grandfather clause IS nice.
you stated: It also helps to pay for Certification Study Materials from Sybex & others...
Elaborate on that statement. | |

| Hi;
I'd like to add something to this post. It was mentioned about discounts. The discount is 25% off of the cost of one exam. That is either Net+ or i-Net+. However, if you are a corporate customer, you can get multiple discounts.
I'm not trying to take anything away from this post or CompTIA, but if the discount is only for one exam, what are the significant benefits from joining other than the discount paying for the membership? I was on the membership website, and didn't find a lot that couldn't be gathered from other resources.
I asked CompTIA about discounts for Sybex or other book publishers, and was told that they didn't have agreements from anyone else that it not mentioned on their website. The page that shows what discounts are available is:
http://www.comptia.com/aboutus/dis_programs.htm
Obviously it is up to the individual to decide if they want to join or not. But if they had a discount for each of their tests, or for other products (such as study material), it would probably entice a lot of others.
Just my opinion.

| Here's a tip:
Some test centers will sell you a voucher for Comptia exams at $160 each. So you don't have to be a Comptia member to get a discounted voucher. I only paid 160, not 190, to take the Network plus exam - my first Comptia cert.
Hope this helps... | |
