Been studying hard for tomorrow but have come across a couple of things I need clarifying:

1. Which network hardware device connects dissimalar network topologies into an internetwork?
I always thought and used bridge and got it right in practise tests but on Sybex practise exam it says router. Which one should it be?

2. Which security is the standard for online transactions?
Always thought and used SET but Sybex exam says SSL. Again please can you let me know which one is correct?

Thanking you.

Did you use solely Sybex for study material?
1. I believe it to be a router or brouter.
2. On this one SSL.
I am just studying and learning so any one please correct me if I am wrong.
Very best of luck to you Kathy!
And let us know how it went.

Robert

Thanks for answering and question two has just clicked for me. The question says security for online transactions NOT for secure transations. Must be why its SSL and not SET.

As for the first question I'm still not sure. Why do you think its router?

I have used Sybex book, Dummies book and anything online I could lay my hands on

A bridge joins two of the same segments together. Think of it like a bridge connecting a road that is seperated by water. Same road but needs joined togther.

Secondly, SSL.. Good luck.

So it is a router then
Thank you for the replies.

first question:
A Gateway joins two disimilar networks together.
like for example: a TCP/IP network and a IPX network together.

A bridge connect to network segments of the same network together.

second question:
SET (secure electrontic transaction) is a set of specfications that includes SSL (secure socket layer). If the question has the world netscape in it, the correct answer would probably SSL, since it was created by netscape.

hope that helps. good luck. I'm taking my test tommorrow too!

Hello Kathy:

The answer to the first question is not “gateway” or “Bridge.” The answer is ROUTER. Why? Pay close attention to the question. It asks, “Which network HARDWARE DEVICE connects dissimilar network topologies into an INTERNETWORK?”

This will drive you to drink because the wording is so confusing. However, the key words here are, “HARDWARE DEVICE” “TOPOLOGIES” and “INTERNETWORK”.

1) Gateway is the wrong answer because a gateway connects dissimilar PROTOCOLS, not topologies. I think Mikeh said Gateway was the answer, but even in his explanation why, his example, he’s talking about connecting a TCP/IP to IPX. But the question asked for TOPOLOGIES, not PROTOCOLS. (Also, in the strictest sense, gateways aren’t hardware devices, per se.)

2) The answer “Bridge” is wrong for the reasons already stated by kchristian. Also, Bridges are usually referred to as devices that “dissect” networks i.e. having one main segment, then splitting it into two “logical” divisions so that network traffic stays local.

So why is ROUTER the correct answer? Taken from Sybex’s I-Net Study Guide, they define a router as “a network device that connects multiple, often dissimilar, network segments into an internetwork.” (Page 17).

I hope it's not too late, but the correct answer is router.

Didn't see your answer till after the exam but had already sussed it this morning after rereading. Glad I did too cos the question was in my exam.
Thanks.

a gateway can be a router.

Look at this previous discussion: http://www.examnotes.com/forums/sho...15&pagenumber=2 dissimilar topologies:

Well I have been looking over the Sybex Net+ Study Guide and it says:

Gateway - is any hardware and software combonation that connects dissimilar environments.

Router - is a network device that connects multiple, often diisimailar, network segments into an internetwork.

Well I think we all are right about saying router and gateway, but I think CompTia is looking for Gateway as the answer.

I agree that Router is definately the correct answer because it doesn't refer to protocols which would make it gateway. But looking back at my report on where I went wrong I'm thinking I got the question wrong cos I didn't put gateway. Confusing !!

I wish CompTIA was a little more clear as to what they were looking for with this question. Since we're looking at other threads regarding this issue, take a look at this one. The reference material posted at the end pretty much settles the issue, in my opinion.
