| A question in a practise exam:
Your ISP has assigned you the IP address 190.28.2.100 and a subnet mask 255.255.255.0 He also assigned you the gateway’s IP address. You assigned this IP address, subnet mask and a gateway to your computer and you still cannot access the Internet. What is the most likely cause of the problem?
I chose answer of ISP assigned you incorrect subnet mask because ip address is class b and subnet mask is class C BUT
apparantly correct answer is ISP forgot to make a change on his router.
Can somebody please explain this to me. Thanks. | |

Look into subnetting to see why the ISP is using a Class B with the mask 255.255.255.0. They are dividing the Class B into smaller, more managable units called subnets. They more than likely haven't added your IP address to the router(Gateway) to allow you access. This is a pretty common error at the ISP end. Good luck on your studying.

| And I too thought that a class b address needed a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 but looks like thats not the case.

My book only tells me how to subnet a class C address. | |

Class B - Subnet 255.255.0.0

These are the "default" subnet masks. The question that you first asked clearly used a Class B address and what appeared to be a Class C subnet mask. This is because eight bits have been borrowed for creating subnets.

the concepts that you have learned regarding subnetting can be applied to subnetting a Class A or Class B.
