Author How to start an FTP session

2000-08-16, 4:17 am

Was looking at the responses to Bryan's questions. This one was really confusing.

16. What command do you use to start an FTP session?
a. login
b. connect
c. action
d. start

I found the following web site and it says:

"When your session is closed, you can then open a new one. To do this, you may use the command:
open machine_name
or:
connect machine_name
Check your version of FTP for the proper command"

I tried "start ftp" and it starts an instance of the FTP utility in a new DOS window, and displays the ftp prompt.

Tried "start ftp examdrill.com" and it opens a connection to examdrill.com in a new DOS window.

With the connection open, I typed "close"
and it went back to the FTP prompt.

Typed "open examdrill.com" and it opens another connection to examdrill.com.

Tried "connect examdrill.com" and get "invalid command"

Conclusion: Based on the info at: www.uic.edu/depts/accc/network/ftp/vftp.html#h1p02
it looks like connect and open do the same thing but it depends on which version of FTP you're using.

I think I would go with "connect" as the answer to the question. Note, it asks:
"What command do you use to start an FTP session?".
I think "session" is the key here. "Start FTP" loads the FTP utility in it's own window, but "open" is what establishes an actual session. If the web site is accurate and "connect" is the same as "open", it must be "connect".

If some other folks could try using "connect" like I did with "open", maybe some will have a version that works with "connect".

I have always used "open". Type ? and you will be given a list of options. I know that 'disconnect' is one so maybe connect is as well.

On the exam I took "Open" was an option and it is what I choose. Of course I don't know if I got it right....
