Author strange question

2000-08-09, 9:45 pm

I found a strange question on a practice test is this for real?

Question: An attack motivated by money is only worthwhile if
a.the value of the attack's results are worth more than the cost of the attack
b.The attacker is a paid professional
c.The attack is on an E-commerce server
d.Money is transferred to the attacker's account

What's the answer. Do you think it's a
ridiculous question?

I think it is a.

It is not a ridiculous question at all. If you have worked security you know that the only way to totally secure a server is to cut the network cable. Therefore, since anything else is a compromise, all you can do is make your sever more of a hassle to hack than it is worth.

It's a weird question, but it is a common sense one to me.

Why do people rob banks? Because that's where the money is.

Why do banks have such strong security systems? Because that's where the robbers are.

Bank robberies are less common now because it is much harder to do, the equipment needed for a large haul is expensive, and the penalties are harsh. If hacking had equal treatment, it would be a LOT less common.
