Author Again, the cookie question

2000-08-04, 2:08 pm

Id really like your input on the cookie question I asked earlier. Is it encrypted or is it not encrypted? Someone take a look at one of your cookies and let me know. Also, let me know what CompTIA wants as an answer please. Thanks.

Cookies are not encrypted. They are text files located in the /windows/cookies directory.

Have you looked at one? Look at one, then explain to me why everything except the date and url looks screwed. Then reply please.

The reason that you may see some cookies that look encrypted is because this is the way the web server sent them to you.

Some web sites send cookies that look just like a bunch of numbers and don't mean anything to you, but when the same server reads them, it know exactly what this information is.

Cookies are not encrypted by your computer.
I am sure that this is the answer CompTIA is looking for

Just one quick additional note...

Don't confuse the Secured property with storing the cookie encrypted. Cookies are never stored encrypted. When I get cookies, or read them from a client machine I can specify whether the cookie is secure. Basically the cookie is deemed secure if it is sent via the HTTPS protocol.

Sometimes people confuse this with encryption so I just thought I would mention it...

a quick note,

cookie.txt can (also) be found in:
