CompTIA Certs in General, i-Net in particular

| I just took the i-Net plus today, after taking the A+ and Network+ last week. The only reason I bothered at all was my college will give me credit for the basic hardware class (without taking it) if I passed the A+ cert. So I figured I might as well go through the rest of the CompTIA certs at the same time.
I was really rather shocked by how easy these questions were. They didn't do a good job of testing troubleshooting skills or process. The i-net test was ridiculously easy - my mother could have passed it. I don't know how much acceptance the test has gotten in the industry, but I know I won't give it any weight when hiring techs.
CompTIA seems to be expanding their offerings hoping to capitalize on the certfication craze. I am all for having a neutral part provide tests - but unless they start testing real world knowledge they are useless.
|
| I agree. I didn't really study much at all for it. The Network+ was easy enough, but the i-Net+ was really an insult -- anyone who has ANY experience using the Internet at all could have passed the test. I haven't got my A+ yet, and I am beginning to wonder if it will be worth the time and effort. I can't ever imagine the i-net+ being worth anything. | |

| please let me know where you are taking this i-net+ exam that your mother could pass...maybe with prior knowledge of networks and after passing net+ and tcp/ip combined with basic development it would be a gimmie...but your mother? i am a test administrator and i've seen people with 14 certs from MCSE+I to net+ to cisco fail i-net plus more than once...they would beg to differ that it is easy...maybe we got a bad shipment of i-net+ exams??? | |
|
| I have heard very conflicting views on this test. Those with in-depth knowledge seem to find it more difficult as the test is worded so that many of the questions have two right answers and it's a guessing game as to what CompTia wants.
Many others say the test is incredibly easy...I guess I will find out for myself next week when I take the exam.

| well if i-net plus wasn't enough of a challenge for you. Try the IN-102 from intel. (KY-Jelly is not included). Guaranteed to make you and your mama cry.

| Hey Jack
Don't You Think That You Should Finish college First Before You Start Dreaming About Having Your Business and Hiring Your Own Techs???
Next Time You Feel Cocky Why Don't You Try Intel's Certification Tests. I Promise After You Are Through With Them You Will Have A New Found Respect For Certifications.
P.S. If You Do Try The Intel Certifications First Visit Your Favorite Proctologist and Get A Nice Soothing Ointment To Rub On The Orifice That Will Hurt The Most.

| Hey Tom -
Oh my, - the anger....
My point was not to say that certifications have no value. I just wanted to say that I felt the i-Net cert was based on a poorly written test that didn't test any real job skills.
I am a strong believer in industry certifications, but if the certification is too easy or doesn't test real working skills then it is useless.
I am certified by a number of industry organizations and vendors. Conceptually I prefer the idea of a neutral 3rd party (CompTIA, IWA) providing certs instead of vendors. But thus far, for networking anyway - the only certs that really measure competence are Cisco. If CompTIA would like to be the authoritative body for vendor-neutral certs they will have to do better than what they have.

| For anyone that may taken the I-Net exam and the Networking+ exam, was there a significant difference between the two? Let me know. | |
|
| Kudos Proadmin!! I am one of those people that you are talking about I have aced 8 other exams and could not pass this one. It is very poorly written and sometimes there could be 2 answers. I only missed one question on both net esstentials and N+, I have received my CIW in foundations which I passed with a 92. This i-net+ is supposed to be on the same material, and possibly it could be considered to be if not written in some kind of cyber foriegn language, I respect those that have passed, but I got to say that I believe truly that there must be 2 very different tests out there. | |
|
| For GottaBe, yes there was a significant difference between the i-Net+ and the Network+. The i-Net+ questions replicated about a quarter of the Network+ test questions, mostly about basic networking and TCP/IP utilities, but very basic stuff. There were a number of questions on security, where certain types of scripts were executed (client or server), a few on protocols, and so on. I used the Sybex i-Net+ Study guide as well as the study guides here and at Cramsession and I found the test very easy. However, if you are unfamiliar with the material, it may seem much harder. There are references to things such as certificate servers, protocols such as LDAP, NNTP and so on, server-side scripts such as ASP and what platforms it can run on (MS IIS) and e-commerce. Several questions about copyrights and patents and what an e-commerce server consists of. If you guys who are failing this test would try to give examples of the parts that you had trouble with, maybe we could help. I'll try to have a brain dump together soon, but I can only use the questions that I had on my exam. But I honestly thought it was the easiest test that I have ever taken. I finished in about 15 minutes and the questions were almost identical to the ones in the Sybex book. Also, ds-techincal.com has some excellent software that helped me. Good luck. | |

| I just has take and pass I-net+ exam, I get 90/100, the exam was ease, but i think that this is a general knowlegle exam, if you pass you get credit for CIW Fundamentals, you don't gone a find complex TCP/IP or HTML questions, but I se tricky questions about CIDR, NAT and CORBA. I recomend evebody take this exam in the path for more complex certifications like CCNA, CCDA, CNE or MCSE.

| I agree, Buran; it was just a basic knowledge test. BTW, congratulations on passing your test. |
