computer screw head stripped!

| I was attempting to open my computer yesterday and I can no longer take out one of the screws, because the head is stripped. Is there anything I can do to get it out. | |

if you can get a grip on it a pair of pliers will do the trick.get a small drill bit and drill it out,then tap the rest out with a screw driver.

| If you can't get a grip on it with some needle nose. There are some screw extractors that most large hardware stores, like Home Depot, carry in the tool department. First you drill a hole at the center of the broken screw head or neck with a bit that is about a 1/3 smaller than the diameter of the of the screw threaded stem, then these extractors use reversed threads so you can slowly screw the extractor in with pliers ("lefty loosy to insert, remember reversed threads). In the process of inserting the extractor the broken screw will back out of the hole. The kits aren't too expensive. Mine was less than $10.
If there is enough of the broken screw exposed you can also use a cutting wheel on a Dremel-type rotary tool, but you will likely cut into the casing around the screw hole a little as well. |
