| can installing ram ever damage your computer? i got a 256mb ddr ram card but it says that if i make a mistake and put it in backwards it can short out the motherboard on the package. is this true? | |

| Sticks of memory are keyed so that you can only insert it one way. I suppose if you try and force it you could do some damage.
Of course, all other standard precautions should be observed. Disconnect power. an antistatic wriststrap is advised.

| Hello:
Why would the manufacturer lie??
If he said that you can damage the motherboard if you insert the stick backwards... then... I would believe him.
But like Supertech wrote... you cannot insert the stick backwards because its keyed, and so it can only be inserted one way.
PS. This is nothing unusual, other hardward can only be inserted in one way. For example: the molex power connector.

| PPS.
A short while ago, I asked whether an audio cable can be inserted backwards in the sound card/CD-ROM, and do damage the the hardware.
I never got a good answer.
This is not covered in my books.
I'd hate to blow somebody's sound card.

| well, normal ram i can see how that is true, but ddr looks like it can be inserted either way but this might be due to my lack of knowlege about ram. they do say that the memory is keyed, but added that it could damage the computer if put in wrong. maybe this is just a warning to indicate they are not responsible for changes to hardware? | |
