| Server Operators can manage printers?
#209 Ian | |
|
| Server operators can backup and restore from tape, manage resources ans shares plus manager printers. Anyone? | |
|
| I tried this on my network. As a server operator I could not manage the printer and all the properties were greyed out. | |
|
| I`m pretty sure you have to be the Print Operator to do any thing with the printers | |
|
| I am quoting this text from Cram Exam
"Ownership
The creator of a logical printer is the owner of that printer. Only an administrator or a user with Full Control can take ownership of a printer. In addition to the ability to change permissions on an owned printer, the owner can also modify form-to-tray assignments, install font cartridges, and adjust the halftone settings."
From the above, I'll guess only Administrator and Printer Operator and creator have the right to manage printers.
I would say Server Operator shouldn't have the right, since the word "Server" refer to the 'machine' and printer is consider a separate 'device'. Why would they need Printer Operator account when Administrator or Creator of the printer can manage it?
I also created an account with Server Operator and I wasn't able to manage it.....
I'll try to find out the actual privilege of Server Operator, maybe that'll answer our question....

| Here is why I Ask this question...
Your network consists of three domains, named HQ,DOMAIN1,and DOMAIN2.A trust relationship exists so that DOMAIN1,DOMAIN2 trust HQ.All user accounts are maintained in HQ.
All client computers on the network are Windows NT workstation computers and are
member of both DOMAIN1 and DOMAIN2.You have just hired a new network administrator
named Maria.
You want to accomplish the following goals:
Allow Maria to add new domain users accounts.
Allow Maria to MANAGE PRINTERS on any domain controller.
Allow Maria to perform a tape backup of any domain controller.
Allow Maria to create shared directory on any domain controller.
You take the following action:
Create a global group named SYSOP in the HQ domain. Add Maria to the SYSOP group.
Make SYSOP a member of the account operator in HQ
Make SYSOP a member of server operator group HQ,DOMAIN1,and DOMAIN2.
Which result do this actions produce?
(Select all)
1.Maria can add new domain user accounts. (yes)
2. Maria can perform a tape backup on any domain controllers. (yes)
3. Maria can create shared directory on any domain controllers. (yes)
4. Maria can manage printers on any domain controller. (Not convinced that Maria can manage printers here)
Many people say 1-4.

| okay, I found this website that might answer your question:http://www.mcmcse.com/study/svrguide.shtml
under USER ACCOUNTS
you will see Server Operators Log on locally
Lock server and bypass lock
Change time
Shutdown or remotely shutdown the system
Backup files and directories
Keep a local profile
Restore files and directories
Create and remove shares
Create common groups
It didn't say anything about PRINTER.
so answer to your question should be
1, 2, and 3

|
| FYI: Only Administrators and Print Operators have control over the printers, found this info on page 82-83 Chapter 3 on User and Group management (by Sybex Enterprise Study Guide)
It makes no mention of Server Operators being able to do anything with the printers.
Now unless you want to get into access permissions etc... |
