Author IIS Question

2000-12-14, 12:11 am

You are setting up a WWW service for 5 different web sites within
your company. You will administer these web sites on 5 different virtual
servers on one physical machine. There are no WINS or DNS servers in the
company. What do you need to set up in order to do this? (select all)

A. Assign multiple IP addresses to the NIC in your server
B. Assign a separate IP to each WWW folder
C. Implement a WINS server
D. Implement a DNS server
E. Implement a DHCP server

Wouldn't you need a DNS server? A, B, and D??

Yes you do, and a WINS server as well.

A,B,C,and D would be the correct answers.

Why do you need WINS?

The WINS server should be installed to assist the DNS server (which should be setup to request NETBIOS name and IP address updates directly from the WINS server).

Installing a WINS server will reduce the overhead needed to maintain entries in the DNS server if new virtual servers are added in the future.

But you could make an argument that WINS is not needed.

See that's where the MWF (Microsoft Weirdness Factor) comes into play.
Are they asking for minimal setup to get it to work, or the preferred/"best practice" setup.

I'd still go with A,B,C,D but I could see A,B,D as well

Sorry I couldn't give ya a 100% dead-on reason...but that's my 2 cents.
