| I got a small network set up with nt4 server and win95 as the clients. I got 4 win 95 comps all same spec, 2 of the clients take a lot longer to log in (valadated by nt4 server) than the other 2 anyone any ideas?there all set up the same as well!!
thanks steve | |

| is it that noticeably longer? Are we talking like 5 seconds, or a full minute or more?

| Hi Stevet!
Ok here go's, plz remember im not an expert yet but i am currently only an MCP who has had hands on experience. So please remember if you try to diagnose your PC with my advise, 1st refer to a manual or book on technincal support(ie-MS Technical Support Self-Paced Trainning Book) and secondly dont change any settings on your PC unless what i say adds up.
1st check to see if you have any problems on NT Server 4.0 by going to the event viewer and looking at the system log. If you have anything in red with a stop sign this means you have an error somewhere and if you have a yellow exclamation mark this tells you of a warning.
The red sign usually comes up if a service failed to startup and the exclamation mark in yellow usually tells you of possible future problems like having low disk space etc.
If you get any of these problems it will cause your network to slow down and validation by the server may also be delayed because of this.
Make sure you sort these problems out before proceding with adding new clients to the network otherwise you could create more problems for your self in the future. I t is usually best to find the root of the problem in event viewer and try to diagnose them from the 1st instance they appeared as problems could spread to other areas.
Once you have fixed the problem you should get a much faster response from the server.
The other thing i will add to this is that you might also have a hardware problem so please check this in you Windows Diagnostics (winmsd.exe). If you do have a hardware problem such as network card Irq or I/O conflict this might also cause the computer to slow down or not function at all. But seeing that the latter has not occured it could well be an service problem.
Also check the size of the paging file size and the amount of virtual memory available to your server. If the recommended amount is not specified it could affect the computers performance even when validating clients, so check this and increase the amount of virtual memory availabel to the server and if you dont have enough hard disk space get more RAM and ad it to your PC asap!
Check the LED(red-light) on your server for excessive paging this is usually an indication of it and if not then you should be able to hear your hard drive cache like mad!
If you are dual booting your Server make sure you dont put the paging file on the boot and system partition as you know this slows the Input and Output on the server or any other machine! Make sure the pagefile.sys is off these partitions.
Is your current processor upto the task of running as a server? Well ok we know that Microsoft recommends a minimum 486/DX33 (intelx86 architecture)processor which is what most people have these days, but is this really enough in the real world? Just about!
The fact is these minimums are ok for connecting maybe 1 or 2 or even 3 pc's but it doesnt mean its the end of the story., no! Your gonna have to check to see if the processor is able to cope by monitoring is usage and queue length in Performance monitor.
Indeed if the processor time is around %75 percent you should replace it before getting to the over 80% mark and if the queue length is above 2 then again think about a new processor. Please do remember that if the Cpu is slow you can be assured that any taks that are to be processed by the cpu will also be slow! So do check this also!
Ok i could go on here but this message is gonna be too long and i hope Stevet reads this
So far this is the server side of things and its best to check all the possiblities for slow network validation.
On to the client side! 1st you should check for similar problems or errors on the win95 clients, however you dont have monitoring tools such as event viewer or perfomance monitor. But you should have tools like network watcher, system monitor and resouce meter or its like in System tools menu. Use these to see if you have bottlenecks and also check to see if your virtual memory has enough disk space to run smoothly without excessive paging by going to the system properties(performance tab).
Also check your clients file system properties in system properties and change it to Network server role. This role will optimise all connections made in or out and will also increase the speed of the computer generally(including apps).
Next, check the system properties-->general tab to see if any hardware problems exist, if you see yellow exclmation marks here, then know you have a problem with a peice of hardware which could mean many thingss like corrupted driver, faulty device, irq or i/o conflict etc.
If you have these problems make sure you troubleshoot them and then make sure you dont have a double instance of a network card and its driver installed (or any other piece of hardware). This can have drastic impact on your network and your computers performance while connecting to a server may take forever!
Make sure you check this in Network Neighbourhood properties and see if you have only the protocols needed to connect to your server or the internet, ie-small networks of around 1-20 pcs can use Netbuei and if you need to connect to the internet then add tcp/ip also. Having multiple clients, adapters, Protocols or services (in the Network configuration tab) which you do not use can also have a great impact on your computers network perfomance, remove these and you should be ok.
I would recommend that you should have client for Microsft Networks as your client, Dial Up adapter (adapter for internet-usually modem), 1 Ethernet card or Nic (Network adapeter card, virtual Private Networking Adapter (for securing internal or local networks from internet connections), you should have either 2 tcp/ip protocols (1 for dialup adapter - modem) and the other for Ethernet card (network adapter card -NIC) and you should also have netbuei for Netbios broadcasts as your other protocol.
Anyway i cant really think of anything else at this moment unless you give me more to go on and i am quite tired right now as im still revising for my Nt Server exam which is tommorrow! I couldnt resist this message as it something i do love to do and thats troubleshoot
I hope this helps but it is difficult to troubleshoot any PC related problems from just this message and so therefore this is not intended to be a guide or reference, its just advice (TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT) and so i will not be held responsible for any damage done to your computer in any way! Oh yeah by the way im not perfect and i am liable to making mistakes just like all human beings!
Peace and im outta here!
