Microsoft Announces New Exam to Ease Transition to Windows 2000
Microsoft is creating a new certification exam to test skills a technical
professional needs to maintain Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 in today's
networking environment. An individual who passes this new exam on supporting
and maintaining a Windows NT Server 4.0 network will demonstrate technical
competence in areas such as maintaining, configuring, troubleshooting or
optimizing servers, clients, users, resource access, network services, and
remote access. The exam will include skills required to maintain and
troubleshoot Windows NT 4.0 networks where incremental upgrades of the
desktop client to Windows 2000 Professional are taking place. The exam will
include skills required to perform incremental upgrades to Microsoft
Windows® 2000 servers and emphasize day-to-day operations, administration,
and maintenance skills. The new exam will enable employers to identify
professionals with expertise in maintaining Windows NT 4.0 as well as with
transitional skills in upgrading to Windows 2000.

Passing the new Windows NT 4.0 exam, which will be made up of a new
objective domain and entirely new exam questions, will certify an individual
as a Microsoft Certified Professional. It will also fulfill an elective exam
requirement in the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
certification. This exam is expected to be released in its beta version
during second quarter of 2001.
Existing Windows NT 4.0 Exams Offered Through February
Windows NT 4.0 exams and other exams scheduled for retirement on December
31, 2000, will continue to be offered to candidates worldwide through
February 28, 2001. The additional two months of availability will
accommodate candidates who are experiencing difficulty scheduling testing
times because of limited capacity at testing centers in some areas,
especially around the holidays. Please register early to ensure a wider
selection of testing times and test centers.

Candidates earning the MCSE certification or Microsoft Certified Database
Administrator (MCDBA) certification in the Windows NT 4.0 track are still
required to upgrade to the respective Windows 2000 track by December 31,
2001, to retain certification.

Please see the frequently asked questions below for more information on the
new exam and extended availability of the retiring exams.

Q. Why is Microsoft creating this new exam on supporting and maintaining a
Windows NT Server 4.0 network?
==============================
======
A. Microsoft designed the MCSE credential as a means for organizations to
identify IT professionals who have the technical abilities to help them take
advantage of the most advanced Microsoft technology-the Windows 2000
platform. At the same time, we recognize that many organizations will plan
to upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 incrementally. The new exam on supporting and
maintaining a Windows NT Server 4.0 network will enable employers to
identify professionals with skills in maintaining Windows NT 4.0, as well
as transitional skills in upgrading to Windows 2000. The new exam will apply
toward the MCSE certification as an elective exam. (top of page)

Q. What type of candidate is appropriate for the new Windows NT 4.0 exam?
A. The appropriate candidates for this exam operate in medium to very large
computing environments that use the Windows NT Server 4.0 operating system.
They have at least one year of experience implementing and administering
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 in environments that support 200 to 26,000 users in
one to 50 locations. Typical network services and applications include file
and print, database, messaging, proxy server or firewall, dial-in server,
desktop management, and Web hosting. Connectivity needs include connecting
branch offices and individual users at remote locations to the corporate
network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet.

Q. Will the new Windows NT 4.0 exam be a condensed version of the old
Windows NT 4.0 core exams?
A. The new Windows NT 4.0 exam will include entirely new exam items and will
cover a different objective domain than the previous Windows NT 4.0 exams.
It will not duplicate any items from the previous exams. Content will
include maintaining, configuring, troubleshooting or optimizing servers,
clients, users, resource access, network services, and remote access. The
new exam will have less emphasis on planning and installation than the
previous exams. An exam preparation guide with complete objectives will be
available in early 2001.

Q. Why should I take the new Windows NT 4.0 exam?
A. If you pass the new Windows NT 4.0 exam, you will earn the Microsoft
Certified Professional credential. You may use this certification to
demonstrate your proficiency and expertise in maintaining Windows NT 4.0 to
potential employers or your current employer. If you choose to pursue the
MCSE credential, you may also apply this exam as an elective credit.

(top of page)

Q. Why doesn't this new exam count as a core credit in the MCSE
certification?
A. The MCSE certification is designed to offer organizations a means to
identify IT professionals who have the technical abilities to help them take
advantage of the most advanced Microsoft technology and compete successfully
in their industry. To ensure that the MCSE certification is recognized as a
leading IT professional credential with value and credibility, it is
critical that MCSEs be up to date on the most advanced technology available.
Therefore, the core exams of the MCSE credential include exams on Windows
2000 only.

We highly recommend that MCSE candidates have a year of experience
implementing and administering a network operating system before pursuing
MCSE certification. Because experience working with Windows NT 4.0 would
provide students with a solid background for the Windows 2000 MCSE track,
passing the new Windows NT 4.0 exam will count as an elective in the MCSE
certification.

(top of page)

Q. Will the new exam count toward the Microsoft Certified Database
Administrator certification?
A. No, the new exam will not count toward the MCDBA certification.

(top of page)

Q. How will this new exam be different from Exam 70-222: Migrating from
Microsoft® Windows® NT 4.0 to Microsoft® Windows® 2000?
A. Exam 70-222, an MCSE elective, measures a candidate's ability to migrate
domains from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 and to perform domain
restructures. A migration refers to the changes made to the Windows NT
Server 4.0 environment during its promotion to Windows 2000 Server. The new
exam will emphasize day-to-day operations, administration, and maintenance
skills in a mixed Windows NT and Windows 2000 environment rather than
planning or installation skills. The two exams are intended to serve
different needs.

(top of page)

Q. How will the new exam be different from Exam 70-240: Microsoft® Windows®
2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0?
A. To help current Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) certified on
Windows NT 4.0 move to the Windows 2000 track, Microsoft is offering
"accelerated" exam 70-240 to any candidate who has passed all three Windows
NT 4.0 exams as an alternative to taking Windows 2000 core exams 70-210,
70-215, 70-216, and 70-217. Passing the new Windows NT 4.0 exam would not
fulfill a core requirement of the MCSE certification; it would fulfill an
elective credit only.

(top of page)

Q. If I've already passed all three of the other Windows NT 4.0 exams (Exam
70-067: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0; Exam
70-068: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0 in the
Enterprise; and Exam 70-073: Microsoft® Windows NT® Workstation 4.0), do I
need to take this new exam? Can I waive taking the new exam and receive
credit for it?
A. The new exam is offered as an option for candidates who want to
demonstrate their proficiency and expertise in maintaining Windows NT 4.0.
It will include entirely new exam items and cover a different objective
domain than the previous Windows NT 4.0 exams. If you have passed the other
Windows NT 4.0 exams, taking the new exam is an option, not a requirement;
you will not receive credit for the new exam unless you pass it.

(top of page)

Q. Does the new exam count towards the Windows NT 4.0 track?
A. Yes, this exam counts as an elective towards both the Windows 2000 and
Windows NT 4.0 tracks of the MCSE certification. Please remember, however,
that MCSEs in the Windows NT 4.0 track are required to upgrade to the
Windows 2000 track by December 31, 2001, to retain certification.

(top of page)

Q. If I pass this new exam, may I request a free voucher for the 70-240
"accelerated" exam?
A. You must pass Windows NT 4.0 exams 70-067, 70-068, and 70-073 to be
eligible to take the accelerated exam 70-240. Candidates who have passed all
three of these Windows NT 4.0 exams are eligible to request one free voucher
to take exam 70-240. Eligibility will be confirmed during the online
voucher-ordering process.

Please note that exams 70-067, 70-068, and 70-073 are available only through
February 28, 2001. For additional information about exam 70-240, please see
the frequently asked questions.

(top of page)

A. Microsoft has a full Windows NT 4.0 curriculum available today
that-combined with experience maintaining the product in today's networking
environment-will help prepare you for this exam. These courses, offered in
several languages at more than 2,000 Microsoft Certified Technical Education
