I passed , and SO can you

| Hi people,
great news is I am MCSE right now, passed NT SERVER in June 9 th ( thats my parents wedding aniversary) but I thought I may share with all poeple.
The questions were easy if you studied from from Transcenders, and ExamCRAM.I passed with 900 / 1000 .if you get the basics right , its to easy.
if you want to get the best out of your NT SEVER EXAM .. just read on..
I have a few pointers..
basically confusing questions you would get is regarding disk configuration , NETWARE connectivity and NTFS and share permissions.
as far as NETWARE conectivity is concerned, wether you have a netbios application running on netware or on NT , if ether side has to access it you have to install NWLINK IP/SPX comapatible protocol.
FOR NT users to acces resources on NEtware network its GSNW on the NT SERVER and CSNW on
CLIENTS WORKSTATIONS. Also try to check the print options,on GSNW.
ok .. as for NTFS permissions... here is how it works.. this is the most confusing part and this is where most people lose marks.
A user is a memeber of two groups
ACCOUNTS and MANAGERS.
there is a folder named RESOURCE that resides on NT SERVER computer.
the permissions are shown as follows..
SHARE permissions
ACCOUNTS group .... CHANGE
MANAGERS group .... FULL CONTROL
NTFS PERMISSIONS
ACCOUNTS group .... Read
MANAGERS group .... Change.
now the question is whast the most effective permission.
most effecive share permission for that folder is FULL CONTROL.
most effective NTFS persmiison for that folder is change .
( the most effective come to effect)..
now when NTFS and SHARE permssions collide , the most restrictive come to effect .. in thios case its CHANGE.
also remember NO ACCESS to either SHARE or NTFS would change the access to the user to NO ACCESS. because NO ACCESS overrides everything.
I got two questions on these lines.
DISK configuraton here is the catch.
you will get on stripe set and mirror set.
here how it goes..
you have three hard drives 500 mb each, how much space is available for data storage.
the catch here is data storage.
if the word DATA STORAGE is mentioned you can just calculate 1000 MB for DATA storage.. because another 500 MB is for PARITY information...
if the question was rather like ..
how much space is available on all the three hard disks.. then i would be 1500 MB. be care ful when yo answet this question. watch the FINE PRINT.
now when Performance is than fault tolerance you can go for STRIPE SET.
you should also know that which of the DISK configurations have more perfomance on read operations...
question:- you want a disk configuration with high read and write perfomance.(note that sometime he may add -- fault tolerance is not so important- to the question)
rememebr that Volume set does not increase performance becase the reading is done disk after disk rather than simultaneus.
STRIPE set with PaRITY isnt a good coice becasue storing PAITY increrases OVERHEAD.as goes with MIRROER SET.
STRIPE SET is a good option because it improves read perfomance.
you maty get situational Questions from these.
thats all I can give you,
if you have any more questions , just give a reply to this posting. or mail me at davidbrainard@examnotes.net
ALL THE BEST.

| Great Job Passing
1 question
SHARE permissions
ACCOUNTS group .... CHANGE
MANAGERS group .... FULL CONTROL
NTFS PERMISSIONS
ACCOUNTS group .... Read
MANAGERS group .... Change
now when NTFS and SHARE permssions collide , the most restrictive come to effect .. in this case its CHANGE.
I would have thought it would be READ if it is the most restrictive.
Thanks for posting your notes. I wish everyone could be as considerate as you.
Godd luck

| hi todd.
thanx for the kind words..
but in case I havent made my self clear in the permissions... her ei go again..
the moost effective of NTFS vs SHARE permissions.. the restrictive of the bothcomes into effect.
I hope you got it.
good luck. | |

| When you deal with either Share folder level (SFL) or NTFS permissions, the least restrictive wins. When you combine them, then the most restrictive wins. Makes sense?

| well, I am always looking for help with new material to post, especially in the A+, Linux and CCNA sections of the site, but also on any other sections, MCSE included. True experience, study guides, prep questions, columns, etc... whatever people want to contribute is welcome! There actually is a contribute button on the first page where you can me stuff you would like to see published, or you can email me a word doc as an attachment using the email button... thanks for asking!

yo Killer & Freak,
Man thats a terrific explanation you gave there, looks like you guys are the ones who created windows NT. I am not kidding guys.
thsi NTFS thing had been bothering me for a quiet a long time. I have cleared enterprose , till then I was in a bigger dilemna with this NTFS and share thing. mr. freak , thats a really cool site , but you need to put a litlle more work on the backgraound colors, it seems pretty dull, and killer, man that name scares me.hehehe, just kidding.

| Congrats that's an excellent score. I am set to write my server exam on Nov 21/2000. Again congrats on a excellent score | |

| Hi guys,
I have a question on NTFS ,regarding moving a file from NTFS on the same partition and moving it to a different partition.
its so confusing, can anyone makt it clearer to me.
Prince | |
|
| Hope this helps...!
(NTFS & Share permissions used together when users connect over network - When combine most restrictive apply)
· Share permissions apply network access only
1.Move Files within same NTFS partition - retain their original permissions
2.File creation, copy and moves across partitions will inherit target folders permissions
3.All NTFS permissions are lost files moved/copied from NTFS to FAT
