anyone know if a primary or extended partition can be part of a stripe set???

Ok Bill here goes,

As long as the Primary partition does Not contain either the BOOT or SYSTEM partitions then Yes they can be part of a stripe set.

Reasoning You can have up to 4 primary Partitions per Hard Disk or 3 Primary & 1 Extended.

Imagine a 3 disk system:
P = Partition

Disk 1 :
P1:Boot & System files
P2:Primary
P3:Primary
P4:Extended

Disk 2 :
P1:Primary
P2:Primary
P3:Primary

Disk 3 :
P1:Primary
P2:Primary
P3:Primary
P4:Extended

Ok now you CAN NOT include P1 on Disk 1 in a Stripe Set
But P2,P3 &P4 of Disk1 Can be as can any of the partitions on Disks 2 & 3

(Mind You Personally I would configure a system as follows)

D1P1 System & Boot Mirrored with P1D2 C:
D1P2 Stripped without parity with D2P2 D:
D1P3, D2P3 & D3P3 Stripped with parity E:

I use this config for non-Hardware Raided systems for either SQL or Exchange servers
Thus drive C: contains Boot.ini etc....
Drive D: would contain Exchange (when Optimiser has been run)
Drive E: SQL to maximize Read-Write performance

I hope this helps if not email me and I'll write a thesis in word for you.

NICE ONE-
what about unformatted parts of a partition; or even different formatted partitions- can the be part of a stripe set?!!

2000-11-01, 11:56 am

Ok bill,

Any free/unused space on any drive/partition can be added to a stripe set.

remember that in NT, stripe sets can be made of 2 to 32 drives
The 32 drive limit comes from NTFS' own limitations...
