Hi guys
I am new to this forum, in fact this is the first time I visited this forum, I found lots of things that is been written here very helpful.

I am considering of taking all my NT4 MCSE exams before it retires. My question is do you guys think it is possible or even worth it. My reason of taking NT4 exams is that most companies (if not all) I talked to still use NT4 and have no plan of upgrading to W2k just yet.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I would suggest that if you want to try for the NT 4.0 track you consider doing the three exams that will allow you to upgrade yourself to Win2K after NT 4.0 exams are retired in Dec. of this year. The three exams are Workstation, Server, and Server in the Enterprise.........then you can pick some electives that are not retiring and that will go toward the 2000 certification. Being certified in NT 4.0 as you have already said may make you more employable now and 2000 later when more companys switch over. My thoughts and as usual.......... My two cents worth..............

You are correct in that most companies are and will still use NT for the next year (or two). Should you cram for exams before the December 31st deadline? In my opinion, no.

Concentrate and spend time on learning the 2000 track. A lot of companies are and will be migrating to Windows 2000.

Another way to look at it is to figure up how much you will spend to get certified. If yo decide to go the NT route and pass all exams by December 31st, you can attempt the accelerated exam for the 2000 track which is a one shot deal and if you take one of the exams in the 2000 track you cannot take it. Not to sound discouraging, but I have yet to hear of someone passing it.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I would say pursue Windows 2000.

Good Luck:-)

My suggestion to you is to follow the first persons advice and take the three core exams that will allow you to have a shot at the upgrade exam. Plus also take net esst because with the four core nt4 exams taken you can still finish an nt4 track msce in 2001 with other eletives that will not retire IE SQL 7.0 It is true that the upgrade exam covers all four 2000 core exams but a lot of people that don't pass it that have studied well should pass one or more of the 2000 core exams this is what I have been reading. one person that failed the upgrade went in the next day and passed three of the four core exams for windows 2000

Another reason to take some of the nt4 exams is to get a job. The level of experience to pass the nt4 track is 0-6 months backround.
The 2000 track per Micosoft is one year supporting a network enviroment. This book is designed for current mcps, MCSE's or people with at least one year of experience supporting a network.By starting on the 2000 track you may find yourself not being able to ever pass a single test. With the Nt4 track take enough so you can at least get yourself a job get some experience and then deal with the 2000 track you will find yourself in a much better playing field. Good luck!!

Hi,
I don't know if this will help you or not, but this is the route that I am taking.

I am taking the 4 NT4 core subjects. Then I was going to take TCP/IP and IIS, but they are retiring and fundamentals of them will be present in each of the WIN2K courses. So now I am going to take 2 optionals that are not retiring. This is because I will have at least 1 or 2 years before I will need to worry about upgrading them.

Then I am going to prepare to write 70-240. This exam is not going to be easy by any means, but I am going to study my *** off! Hopefully hard work and preserverence will pay off.

Then, I am going to take the other required core exam. I haven't decided which one it will be yet though.

At that point I will have an MCSE in NT4 and an MCSE in Windows 2000. This will prepare me to be employable anywhere, provided the employer is using one of these two platforms.
Then, when my NT4 MCSE is stripped on December 31,2001, I will still have my Windows 2000 MCSE. And hopefully, by the time my NT4 optionals that I choose do retire, I will be working for a corporation that will send me back to school to get the 2 new Windows 2000 options.

This is the route that is right for me. You have to decide what is right for you and be true to yourself.

Remember though, that older certifications make it appear as if you have been in the industry longer, and therefore make your resume more attractive.

Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciated all ur advice, u all have some valid points, although everyone I know is keep telling me to take the w2k rout, I feel that having NT4 will be very beneficial and will at least get me through the employment door. My only worry is that if I can do it the specified time frame. But I am confident I can at least do the 4 core NT4 exams before it retires in December. I’ll book my first exam next week. If that goes well then I will know where I stand, if not I have to rethink my strategy. I am craming for NT Workstation for the next few days, and then start NT server etc…..

Ones I thank u all and please keep the advice coming
