Inherit Permissions - Retain Permissions
|
|
|
| Going through Exam Essentials I have run across this question which I don't believe is correct: What happens to file permissions when you use Windows NT Explorer to copy a file from one directory to another on the same NTFS partition of your Windows NT Workstation computer?
I personally thought that because the file remained on the same NTFS partition that the permissions would remain the same, however the Exam Essentials answer states that they would be inherited from the destination directory (which I thought only happened when you changed partitions). Any thoughts?

| If you move from one NTFS volume to another the file inherits the attributes of the target folder. If you move within the same NTFS volume the file will retain the original attributes. If you (copy) a file anywhere, within the same NTFS volume or to another NTFS volume the file will inherit the attributes of the target folder.......

| FUBAR is right. Be very careful of the keywords: Move & Copy.

| Yep that confused me too until I seperated out the move and copy. I had one of those questions on the exam too so make sure you read carefully | |
|
| The way I remember this is;
MRS
M (move to the same NTFS partition)
R (retain)
S (same permissions)
anything else inherits
Try it!

| Not bad Chase.. that kind of helps me too.
MRS-Move, Retain,Same
so I assume for copying would be
CIT-Copy, Inherit, Target folder's permissions
LOL boy this one is not as easy as yours but is it right????

|
| Yes you are correct Maxxym, once you get it in your head its really pretty simple to remember......(only one step will retain the parent folder permissions, anything else inherits the target folder permissions)
Copy anywhere = Inherits the attributes of the target folder.
Move to another partition = Inherits new
folder attributes.
Move within the same partition = retains the
same attributes as the parent folder.
You guys got this, next topic *wink* *wink*
Good luck to all.................

| I am sure I can come up with new topic FUBAR.. let me think here for a second... hmmmm...hhhmmm...oh I got one for ya!!
Do you have any easy way to remember Disk Configurations? (Disk Striping, Volume Sets etc..)
|
| Give me a little time, and I will come up with a way to remember them. I am studying for a couple of certs myself so it may be a little bit but I will get back to you promise.............. |
