Need Help, installing NT4 along with WIN98 on the same HD??

Okay, I'm willing to go through all of the hassel it will take to FDISK, erase, partition, install win98, install NT4 Wrkstation. I have a single 6.4 Gig HD and I want to install WIN98 and NT4 on the same physical HD. BUt of course I have thought of a few new questions;
1. How does the boot startup know which o/s to switch too?? Can I set one as the default, or will I always have to pick from a list each time I turn on my PC?
2. Will my Win98 suffer becuse I will run it in FAT16, as compared to now which is is FAT 32?
2A. Will I have to partition my Hard drive 3 times (I have a 6.4gig HD), because doesn't Fat16 only allows 2048MB size HD MAX??
2B. I have a CD-R drive(drive D and a CD-RW drive (Drive E. When I redo all of this stuff, can I set the first 2 partitions as drives C:, & D: and then the two CDr/w srives as Drive E; & F: and then have the last in NTFS as drive G: ???
2C. Will I have to create any kind of special startup .ini file so that DOS will know which o/s is the default and which needs to be switched to??
3. Will there be problems when my new HD has Win98 and I install all of my applications and Net type software; when I'm in Nt4 will I not be able to install some of the software I use for my Win98 computer? Or when I'm in NT4, will I be able to access/or open and run applications off of my FAT16 partition that would be DRIVE C:\ from within NT Workstation, or does the application MUST be instaled on the same partition that NT Workstation is for it to run properly, while I'm booted into NT4??
4. Since I have SDSL, I also have it hooked up to a network card, will there be problems or conflict with this, as maybe the NIC card has win 98 drivers, but maybe NT4 will try to take over the card??
5. Right now I only have NT4 WRKST, but in a few days I will have NT4 Server, can I install both NT server & NT workstation on that single drive partition? Will I boot up with 3 diffrent choices of O/S; WIN98,NT Server 4 & NT Workstation 4.
6. I will only be using the last HD partition to practice NT stuff, and I know that I will be selling my self a bit short, as I will only be using NT on a single computer that is not Networked, but I need some practice. My question is, I don't plan on installing any other software on the same drive as NT, so what would you say is the minium HD space I will need to run NT workstation & server on the same drive?? 1Gig? the full 2Gigs, to optimaly have WRK/Server on the same partition?

| I can help you some:
1. Pick from a list. This dual boot is handled by nt via ntboodd.sys file & (the file is named something like this... I'm fuzzy) Boot.ini
One can be set as the default and you can choose how long before NT chooses the default. Use the Startup/Shut Down tab in System CP OR Edit the Boot.ini file to do set this interval. You can choose the default os via editing Boot.ini as well, I am not sure if there is a GUI method as with setting the 'TIme out' period listed above.
2. Your win95 will take more disk space than on Fat32. depending on your average file size, up to 30%
2a. Yes... 2G partition max for FAT
2b. In NT you can remap the drive letters. By default, you will not have the drive letters you are specifing. If you do remap, I am a bit unclear what the effect of this will be in Windows95. I believe that it will be fine.
2c. DOS does not have anything to do with this as Windows NT will control the boot process and the multiple OS's. I recomend installing a bootable DOS along with NT & 95 on the FAT partitions to aid in future crash recovery. Remeber, Win95 & DOS can not read NTFS. Using the single drive you describe, if you do not need local file security, I would question the need for NTFS at all. It could make sence if you used 2G for 95 and 4 gig for NT. BUt with NT on NTFS, you can not use dos to troubleshoot system problems, so if NT crashes, you will only be able to restore from BU should the ERD fail. AND, MAKE SURE the CD drives are on the HCL for NT. If your CD is not compatible w/ NT, you could be in for a ride.
3. Each application must be installed for each platform. Due to registry differences, you can not share Apps between NT & 9x. You can share any files that are stored on FAT partions between OS's however.
4. If it is an NDIS compliant card you can map multiple network protocols to the same card. Should be not problem, as long as NT drivers exist for it.
5. Yes, you can dual boot Srvr & WS, however you need to run them on seperate partitions. That pesky registry again.
6. I do this for practice on the minimum listed dive size for an NT install (mine is on 154Mb!). It is better if you are networked, but if no option, something is better than nothing.
You have a problem, however, in that you must respect 'boot boundries' and requirements about the locations of system files for the various Windows & DOS OS's you are refering to. Get the boot files installed on the wrong partion or too 'deep' in on the disk and things won't boot. (In general, keep NT Boot files inside the first 2G & 9x Boot files inside the first 8G). This may mean making smaller partiions to keep the OS's required files close to the 'front' of the disk. Partion magic is a usefull program with GREAT info on all these details. I run Win 95 on the first 1.5G fat32 partion (as this computer has to function first, then act as a test machine for studing second). Then, NT & 98 dual boot on Partion 2&3 (154Mb & 1.5G respectively). I used Partion Magic v5 to set this up, so I could retain use of Win95 'as it is' without wiping the drive & starting over. it is a cheap program (about $100 if you shop around).
Be sure to install the network adapter at setup to avoid trouble: you should consider using the MS loopback network adapter option to get NT up and running, then install the real NIC after NT is up.
Good luck & I hope this helps!
-Mr. Mac & New MCP does Windows, but all this is right to the best of my knowledge!

| As a related matter to this material:
This is from a question posted that kinda relates to your situation-
>>I also thouht 'B' was correct, but DanK got the key point. The stripe set is the problem.
The partion size is Too big for FAT. This is why the NTFS version of the question is worded the same, with a diffrenent answer than this one.
**As for FAT & Maximum drive sizes, if you want FAT for compatibility with DOS (etc..)then the Max size is 2G (using standard 32k clusters). If only NT is using the FAT partion you can use 64k cluster sizes and increase the max disk size to 4G. As a practical limit, 2G. As a test Question, 4G as it concerns FAT sizing & sole use by NT.**
As for the 400mb & FAT issues raised above. It is said that FAT poorly utilizes space on larger drives. But it can (and is) used on larger drives anyway for a variety of good reasons (DOS & OS2 compatibility being big ones). NTFS is optimized for drives greater than 400Mb, thus this can be seen as a reason to use NTFS rather than FAT on drives greater than 400Mb. There is no rule like "If the drive is greater than 400Mb, Use NTFS" for these compatibility (and the related disaster recovery) reasons. |
