Ok, here is the situation. I have a friend, yes it really not me, who has a copy of XP-Pro that has a bad code number. Now he/she, wants to do the Microsoft updates but for the reasons stated cannot. Now, can he/she just buy an upgrade version to become legal or do he/she has to buy the whole new XP-Pro.

He'll have to get the full version. You can't upgrade if it already has XP pro on it.
