Hey guys,

I have another question for all you It guys,

I am looking for some sort of inexpensive or even better, free software for network monitoring.

I am looking for something can i can use to check throughput being used by our routers, maybe even though our small switches.
something to do checks on our servers to make sure they are up, and something that is not too hard to install,
I am really hoping I will be able to find software for linux, My VP would like us to try linux for some non critical apps, to show an advantage for adding a few boxed in our network. to our CIO.

Hello,

try an internet search for Ethereal. It's a free network monitor.

I second that. Ethereal rocks. And if you're on a Windows platform, it comes with NetMon for free, but I still would go Ethereal over NetMon anyday...

Ethereal is awesome and best of all it's free. Looks a bit funny in Windows though.

Ethereal's a great sniffer; use it to send captures to TAC all the time. Not sure it's as robust as you're looking for. If your VP comes to reality and is willing to shell a bit of money to deliver what he needs, check out http://www.solarwinds.net/ . Pretty easy to implement and from what I've seen from it it is worth its weight for the price.

I have just found a very simple network monitoring software package. Monitors ICMP (i.e. PING) and disk statistics and sends alerts via SMTP, Lotus Notes and NET SEND commands. Also, has a nice feature in that it allows the user to use their own network drawing as a background for the application. Looks sweet when running. Software is called VMonitor and is available at
