SpyBot

Ad-Aware

SpyBlaster

Microsoft Anti-Spyware

AVG Anti-virus

Firefox

All of those links are free products and when used together almost completely eliminate spyware/virus threats from my computer. Yes, I said almost because you can not eliminate them completely. However, I have not had a virus since I started using this setup and my spyware is limited to about 3 a month (usually just tracking cookies).

YEah, one isn't good enough, and you need to update them regularly just like your antivirus programs.

Reminds me, I need to do that!

Oh, and I've also heard that running more than one AV program is bad. I've never tried it, because of that; one will think the other is a virus.

Never heard of Avast, I'll have to check it out. However, I strongly urge against software firewalls. All they do is slow down your computer and most people do not set them up correctly, thus causing more problems then they are worth. Instead I would recommend a hardware firewall (like a linksys router) since they are much easier to setup, save your system resources and don't annoy you every .05 seconds with an annoying popup claiming something bad could be happening.

First download all you can I run avg and adaware all the time the work great but some anti spyware and virus programs do identify each other as a virus.also look for a program called cwshedder incase you've already got a trojan on your computor.most virus programs won't remove certain torjan's but will identify them, and their a real pain in the XXX to remove mannually, then theirs the kind that if you miss just one piece of it it renews it self had one on ME that I'd removed mannually and it keep restoring its self because part of it was in the ME's system restore file.and cwshredder removals them all if I remember right. think this is its last link. http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html

they mergered or got taken over by trend micro---pcpillen

Some of the programs that were listed really are pretty nifty. I know I use several of them. I find that only one or two is just not enough.

With Adaware, if it comes back with even one process the thing will be back running before your next scan. Try running it in safe mode and then manually tracking the thing down after killing it with the scan.

You might also want to poke through the registry for things like that 1-800 search assistant. Make a copy of the registry and get rid of all of that too.

I don't trust spyware blockers. All they really do is put a bandaid over a gaping wound. Sure you won't see the popups but the problem isn't really solved. They allow you to surf in peace and still send your information back to their company. There are comercials about blockers around here. They make me ill inside since they are convincing a person that spyware isn't a problem if their pop ups are being blocked.

Popups and spyware and adware aren't any of the same things, though. Most of us are annoyed by adware. Those are the self-installing ads that don't do anything malicious other than installing themselves on our computers. Popups are advertising windows that pop up in the middle of your screen. Of the three, spyware is the only thing that is actually illegal. It is the software that does things like search your files for your private information, records your keystrokes, grabs passwords, etc. Of the three, only spyware has purely malicious intent. Popups and adware are simply for advertising purposes. Congress is confused as to what constitutes what, as well, but these are the official descriptions. Most users would like to make it illegal for ANY software to install itself without your express permission; right now it isn't illegal to do that, and if you click on something in an advertiser's website, they can claim that you have given tacit consent for them to place a cookie on your computer to track your visits. Tracking cookies aren't the same thing as spyware that records your credit card information when you type it into a secure form on a web page.

Majorgeeks.com is a great site for downloads of freeware, shareware, and commercial software to keep your machine clean, they offer reviews and site mirrors for the downloads, and they even have people who can help you decipher a hijackthis log; this is not for the faint of heart, but it is a fabulous tool!
