My ex-wife’s PC computer has a Trojan Virus. It is in c:\system volume information\_restore. Now Compaq help desk told her that all her MP3 files could not be infected. Also, the files cannot be quarantine. I think I know what to do. My question is the help desk guy correct?
Thanks

Mauwakee,

See this link about the system restore files:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;264887

Do you know what the specific trojan/virus is? If so I'd check out Symantec's or McAfee's for instructions on cleaning it. Usually these sites will say to disable system restore (per the above instructions), run a full virus scan, reboot, then enable system restore again.

Often the virus infects the restore files, so if you don't disable it each time you reboot you get the virus again.

Again, the best bet is to get the specific instructions on the Trojan if you can. AND be sure to download the latest DAT files for your virus software before scanning.

The instant answer is ...

Turn off system restore - reboot machine.
Run AV scan, which should be clean as after the reboot the system restore files should be deleted. Turn system restore back on and you are done.

I have however noted that occasionally you need to reboot twice before the system restore files are deleted. I also suggest running disk cleanup prior to your AV scan.
