Hia guys. haven't been here for awhile, but owell. I've been looking through the site, and im debating which certification to try and get next. After reading all the posts badmouthing comptia, im not so sure i want to get their server+ cert. i recently got the I-Net which was so easy for me. I have my A+, N+ INET+ and im currently doign a web design diploma/cert. I know web design very well, and know quite a bit about programming. The Inet was easy for me, i simply read the textking guide and passed, simply because i know most of teh stuff. I prefer to have a book to read though. I've been thinking about CIW, are they any good? what about mcse, or mcsa, the only downside of those are that they take a while. Im stil in highschool, and have lots of hw, but im looking into another cert. If anyone can point out some good certs, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

im mainly looking for a small, well respected cert.

Linux+ might be of interest, since most web servers are running apache... sec+ is always a good one to have under your belt.

MCSE and MCSA, can't go wrong, but why would you want to go that route if you are into web design?

test-not-so-king...tsk, tsk...

well im not so sure im going to do web design. i still have a little while to decide. I kinda want to be a network admin, so i guess i should get the sec+ or linux +, but i dont know linux well enough right now, i havent been using it for long. right now im open to all areas

then you might as well start looking into the 210 and 215 tests. Each will give you a quick cert: the MCP. Then on to the MCSA, to finish with the MCSE. Not a bad track, with certs along the way

whats the difference between mcsa and mcse, ones engineer, one is analyst. do you need both though, and whats mcp? i've looked it up, it's so confusing! mc this.. mc that.. m+ MC+...geeeeez..lol

i don't want to start anythign big until the summer. right now im just looking for a simple 1 test certification. I think the security+ and server+ would be good certs to have if i wanted to be a network admin right?

any MS test that you can take to qualify you for the MCSE gives you the MCP. In other words, one test, one cert.

All the tests required to acquire the MCSA count towards your MCSE, so there is no waste of time there. The MCSA is 4 tests.

After that, you need to add another 3 tests to get your MCSE.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
... now i get it. thank you.

i think im gonna leave that til the summer, or sometime before the summer. not sure though. cause the ms test are hard, i know that much..lol, but i think the server+ or sec+ would be fairly easier. on a personal level.. what would you do? are the ms test gonan retire and update anytime soon?

I don't recommend the server+. It is useless in terms of marketing your skills, and it is a rehash of the A+ - not to mention that it is poorly written.

This said, the sec+ is a good test to study for. Also badly written at times, but covers material that should be required knowledge for all admins.

Feel free to join my chat session on Sec+ for more info

It's a good choice. It was one my favorite certs to study for. Let me know if I can be of help to you as you go through the actual studying

well, I'm gonna go pick up a book this weekend. I love to have a study guide for these. I probably won't start studying for about another 2 weeks or so, simply because the whole point of me doing another certification was because im going to New York. I have a 5 hour flight there, and a 5 hour flight back or so. + waiting around time (ya know). so im going to use that time to read. that or sleep:P.

When you do the MCSA cert check out the requirements. When I last looked some of your CompTIA stuff will substitute for part of the cert. You will be able to take one less test to qualify.
