| Hello all,
I just recently passed both my A+ exams and am now certified. I was considering applying for my local best buy store but was waiting to hear what you all think. I don't have any experience except for working on my home pc and I heard best buy doesn't provide much training... What's a good place for a newbie to start at?
Thanks,
Sean | |

hehehe you don't need the A+ for that though. You'll end up doing more than just PC stuff, but most of it is actually removing spyware/adware and OS installations, but expect the other things like degaussing TVs and pulling stuck dvds out of dvd players. Nothing too cool.

I worked in the Geek Squad for about a month when I first came out here(took off as soon as I got something better though). Anyways, from my understand they usually only put NEW people into the service department if they have worked as a pc tech before, but they also bring people from their sales department into the service center even if they do not have previous tech experiences.
I do not know if this is company wide though, it could have just been the specific one I worked at. I also found best buy(geek squad) to be filled with a bunch of idiots who couldn't control themselves, it felt like high school at times.
My first job in tech was working a small mom n pop store. It wasn't solely as a PC tech, it is nice experiences too because in small shops like that you tend to have more responsibility.(in my case I was in the store so I had to open and close it plus place orders etc...)

| Good Luck on looking for a job with A+. | |

| Geek squad, looks a little degrading to me.
But hey if you dont mind wearing polyester.
And it will get your foot in the door and experience is key.
Gets right on my tits when someone calls me a Geek at work.
Good luck on your job hunting by the way.

Really? I like being considered a geek. Doesn't bother me one bit, it is actually something I am proud of. People are often times proud of things they shouldn't be proud of(thing they have no control over), but it takes hard work to be a geek....

| The comment that always chaps my a$$ is when someone tells me they don't care to learn about all that silly computer mumbo jumbo.
Really... well thanks for calling my carreer and industry silly and mumbo jumbo.
Sean,
Congrats on the A+. This industry is a hard one to crack. Apply everywhere and take anything that comes along. Without actual work experience it's an uphill battle, but you can do it.
I've never had a tech job that actually gave me honest training. Everything is on the job or self study.
Good luck my friend. | |
