Hi all - I've got one i can't figure out:

WinXP Home SR-2, all updates etc, will connect to net (cable) using ONLY IExplorer and Outlook Express. I installed Firefox and get a 'Connection Refused' msg. AVG, Ad-aware and every other utility i install will not update. The behavior is exactly the same whether the Win firewall is active or not. Yesterday, i went through the complete firefox troubleshooting regimen, and the 'Connection Refused' msg is now permanently burned onto my retinas'.

IExplorer, ironically, is fast and stable. Online virus scans are negative. PC acts normal - ie fast and stable in every other way (is less than a year old). Winsock issue? Anyone here seen this?

Thanks!!

this first thing to look at is your firewall? Sounds like a rule was created to block the programs. Next I would download Ad-aware and spybot to a usb drive from another computer and install in on your troubled computer. This would be a good start to troubleshoot.

Kevin - firewall has no rule i've been able to find that would prevent connectivity. PC behaves exactly the same whether firewall is disabled on enabled. Yes, I installed ad-aware and avg anti-virus from a thumb drive and scans were nominal.
