Hello,

Not sure if this is the right forum, but it's worth a shot. I am interested in changing my career and becoming a network admin and eventually working in network security. I am currently in the distance learning field (I develop web based training sites, etc.).

My question is what do I need to break through in the network admin field. What types of skills do I need for an entry level job? Should I obtain a basic certification (MCSA) before I try to enter the field or wait until I'm in.

I already have a Master's in Instructional Technology and I really don't want to go back to school for another degree, but I am up to working towards the certs.

thanks

This link should answer most of your questions.

I don't mean to sound brash, but I just don't see how someone with a Master's in Instructional Technology doesn't know how to progress in the field of technology.

Didn't you have to take any technology related classes to get your Masters?

Ahh, curious....so simple isn't it? I wish.

Well, I do know how to progress in the field of technology. I've been developing multimedia for a few years and have done quite well.

I also know that working with end user multimedia applications is nothing at all like working with networks.

Finally, I know enough to know the first step to acquire knowledge I lack is to ask questions. This I have done. Apparently, this WAS the wrong forum.

I was being serious. Didn't you have to take any information systems classes that taught you about administering a network?

But to answer your question, people don't usually jump straight into a network admin job. They usually have to start out as a technician or desktop support. After a couple of years, you can probably land a network admin job.

Beginning certs are A+, Net+, MCP, or MCSA, or even the new MCDST. Once you start looking for network admin jobs, look at getting MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, RHCE, CNA depending on what interests you the most.

Take course from training center or colleges.. boost up your knowledge and have "luck" on your side to find a job..

Difficult job market... at this time..
