You'll need to reinstall ntoskernel using the recovery console.

If you have the windows cd boot into the recovery console and you will find ntoskrnl.ex_ in the I386 directory. This file needs to be expanded using the "expand" command ,, sorry im not exactly sure of the syntax at the moment but you can type expand /? to see how.

A little more specific. I boot into the cd, then I will be given the option to boot into the Recovery Console? Then I will be in DOS mode? Then I would have to go C:\I386 directory and find ntoskrnl.exe and expand it or C:\winnt\I386.

if you have booted off the CD, and have not got an I386 directory on the harddrive, goto the cdrom (D: drive normally) and then look for the I386 directory

I stand corrected D: drive. I'll give it a try.

I entered syntax
"expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.exe C:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe" I got an "access denied" response. is this the correct syntax.

there is only one user in this laptop and its the admin. I am trying to just reinstall windows from scratch but I ran into the volume name that I can't duplicate with those o's.

Which one?

°°°°°F these are decimal 248
ºººººF these are decimal 167

Lock the keyboard for the ten key option and do and ALT-248 or ALT-167

Cool!

I guess that was to protect the users when all it did was frustrate the tech.

While you're in Recovery Console, CHKDSK the system drive. You may have file system corruption issues. If not this, there is the possibility that the Registry is damaged.

The recovery console for Windows 2000 does not ask for the admin password. Another Microsoft gem!

It will, if it can find the Registry. I suspect file system corruption -- CHKDSK should be run on this system to fix it or at least rule that out.
