Just did a fresh install of XP pro. There are 4 users who will use this computer. Each one was set up with their own account. The problem is that when I reboot the machine it automatically opens to the Admins screen. I cannot seem to get it to open with a logon screen for the individual users. I have assigned passwords and set each users account...Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Have a look at this to see if it helps.

I gave it a try but nothing, Thanks anyway.. There has to be something in control panel. I had this problem before with another install but rectified it.. I just forget how I did it..

if you go into the control panel and then user accounts and then click "Change the way users log on or off", you should get to a window like the one shown below. did you try putting a check mark next to Use the Welcome screen?

Do you mean you want the Welcome screen that lists all the users on the computer?

Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
Open User Accounts.
Click "Change the way users log on or off".
Check the "Use the Welcome screen".
Click "Apply Options"

I've tried it several times and for some unknown reason when I reboot it says loading personal settings and opens to the admins desktop. Exactly greenday girl that is what I'm trying to achieve. BTW how have you been? Thanks guys any other suggestions. I getting ready to give up for the night and crack a cold beer...LOL

It sounds as if it's defaulting to an MMC setting.

I don't have my books with me at the moment. I'll try to see where in the MMC it would be found.

Thanks sandy..I'll be on line for a few hours so I'll check in periodically..I actually was so frustrated that I blew the machine out and I'm doing a fresh install to see if I missed something in setup...It's a clients machine so I want to make sure there are no glitches in the Matrix..I still think Win 2k pro is a much more stable OS...

jkhnwspec was on the right track, but it's the exact opposite of what the link showed.

Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mi
crosoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Make sure AutoAdminLogon is set to 0

That's it. It was on the tip of my tongue, but I wasn't sure where it was.

I was also thinking of winnt.sif where you can request admin logon right off the bat to do certain tasks related to installation & that you might've set it to "yes".

Either way, I still don't have my books here..so I'm still just guessing.

Thanks George and Sandy. What I did after I blew the machine out was install Win 2k pro, and applied all the acounts and passwords, I then upgraded to XP and I finally got the log on screen...Yaa
It was kind of the hard way to do things but i just wanted to check on my installation. I like 2k pro because during install it asks you if you are going to be the only person on the machine or are there going to be multiple users...
Problem solved for now...I hope....Thanks so much to all...

While I didn't say it, I was trying to get iggy4270 to take a look at those keys in the registry and possibly post what was found. I don't like to tell people to go ahead and just edit something in the registry, when the wrong move could have them reinstalling. I don't think iggy4270 would have done this, but Murphy's Law is always present.

Actually, I think NOT telling them specifically what to do might cause problems. You don't want to show someone where to look in the registry, then let them guess on their own how to fix it.

Just my 2 cents.

Point well taken.

What you say makes sense.
