| What are all the things you can think of that can cause the message, in OUtlook 2002, on a W2k machine, regularly defragmented and cleaned of junk files, "you are running low on system resources. Close some files before continuing" or something close to that.
Cleaned out all the temp files and temporary internet files. Defrags once every week or two weeks.
Not sure if SP3 is installed, but with no other programs running in the foreground or background, this message appears when user tries to print an outlook message.

| I get that sometimes with outlook 2000 and win2k.
it's nothing to do with HD space. I have found it's just outlook having a bad day.
or you have too many things open at once or a program which was open but when closed didn't release the memory it was using (program could have crashed).

| I knew it wasn't HD space, and I knew it wasn't "memory." We did all the de-junking, and someone else told me that OUtlook just doesn't like to stay open for long periods of time. I have trouble with Outlook, periodically, but I can't leave it shut down because I get stuff in all day long that I have to attend to immediately. But even after the user doing a hard boot, the problem kept coming back after everything else we did.
So this is just OUtlook's way of saying, "Leave me alone for a while." I guess.

| Something like that, although it could possibly be caused by other programs. | |

Any examples you can think of?

| none specific, just ones that may have crashed out.
also where do you keep your PST file?
is it local or on the network?
| yanqui 2004-09-09, 1:32 pm |
| Everything's local. We have sort of a hybrid network, but primarily peer-to-peer.
I know she has stuff on her computer that nobody else has, so it's very believable that something has crashed. ALSO--even though the task manager doesn't show it, something may be running in the background, or she could have some malicious spyware--could some of that stuff cause resource hogging?

| mine seemed to happen either on a program crash (other than outlook), loss of network connection to where PST was stored, or having too many other apps open.
I tend to have many excel sheets open at the same time (some small, some big), and if I went away and left the PC locked for a significant time, I would come back to find various issues, sometimes the outlook one sometimes other weird things.

| the two things I would look at are:
Increasing your virtual memory
and
running Office updates
Hope that helps. | |

| Some thoughts over and above what's already been said in the thread:
1. Limit the amount of space the temporary internet files are allowed to take up, as IE's tendency is to let it grow. Recently on a friend's computer I shrunk the size from 2348 MB to something more manageable (50MB).
2. Copy over msconfig.exe from an XP machine to winnt\system32 on the 2K Pro box, and run it to look for and eliminate unnecessary programs running at startup.
3. Check to see the user profile hasn't become too bloated. I recently shaved my own user profile from over 2GB down to 450MB, mainly by relocating file and iTunes downloads out of the My Documents folder.
4. It couldn't hurt to eliminate spyware and viruses as possible issues.
5. How much RAM is in the 2K box? 256MB would be a reasonable place to start.
Hope this helps. | |

| How often is Outlook set up to check for new mail?
I once encountered this situation where a client had set Outlook to check every MINUTE!!
