Wireless networks - how fast?

| Just trying to find out the average speed of 802.11b and 802.11g networks because I think mine is running slowly at 300k per second.
I'm not a network person, so if anyone has any links to plain english (written for idiots) guides to correctly setting up and configuring wireless networks, please let me know.
Thanks for any help

| OK,
It seems my firewall shows throughput in bytes and I was thinking in bits...
feel silly now!

| just as a general most always rule in this IT field,
speed is usually expressed in BITs (per second), and capacity is usually expressed in Bytes. | |

| 802.11b = 11Mbps
802.11g = 54Mbps
If you're having performance problems, consider the following factors:'
-- Distance: range is about 100M, but I wouldn't expect it to get a top speed connection at the periphery
-- Signal blockage: is there a lot of metal structural materials between the router and the client?
-- Interference: I've seen where a cell phone getting a call causes connections to be dropped |
