What are the main differences? Also what is the difference between clustering and load balancing?

I had to look it up myself the other day...thought I'd pass on the link. The difference between Server 2003 Standard versus Enterprise? I wouldn't know. Not my area of knowledge yet.

quote:
Network Load Balancing distributes IP traffic to multiple copies (or instances) of a TCP/IP service, such as a Web server, each running on a host within the cluster.

Network Load Balancing transparently partitions the client requests among the hosts and lets the clients access the cluster using one or more “virtual” IP addresses.

From the client’s point of view, the cluster appears to be a single server that answers these client requests. As enterprise traffic increases, network administrators can simply plug another server into the cluster.

So it looks like they work together. It looks like in 2003 clustering isn't offered in the standard edition. I am not positive as I am still learning. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a page that contains a wealth of information. Don't forget to check out the hotlinks too.

Hi ya,

The main diff is that Enterprise2k3 can be used for Clustering, plus it supports more processor- up to 8 with up 32Gb Ram.
While standard is just that - Standard :-)
Standard does not support Clustering, supports upto2 processors and max of 2Gb Ram.

Clustering is basically using multiple machines in parallel(so to speak), If 1 machine fails then those services/ resources are covered by the other machine in the cluster-- more like hardware sharing. Mainly used for FAULLT TOLERANCE

Network load balance: All the available machines offer the services/ resources at teh same time. Used to INCREASE PERFORMANCE.

Hope this helps.
